CHARACTER INFO
Character Name: Damon Nacht
Canon: Original
Canon Point: About a month after moving in with roommates to a flat.
Appearance:
Standing at 5'8", Damon mostly looks like a lean, slender human, but certainly is off in many respects about that. The skin is certainly blue, the eyes are completely red and sometimes even glowing, and he has pointed ears and a pair of horns on his head. With some careful detailing, people will even notice he has black fingernails, which aren't painted -- just another unfortunate piece of his genetics. At first, it does look like Damon is perpetually wearing a bat-inspired cape, but should someone look at his back it becomes clear that he actually has a pair of webbed wings that he keeps resting on his shoulders. With all of this strange appearance, it might explain why Damon makes a habit of attempting to wear bright or colorful clothes to offset how he looks.
Age: 21
Setting:
The variation of Earth that Damon comes from would not be all that different from many others, particularly of universes that come with its brand of heroes -- superheroes, as it were. The world is modern, set maybe no more than a few years into the future at most.
Science and its progression largely rules in this version of Earth, the idea of superheroes not quite normalized as it slowly adjusts to warm up to those who strive to do good in the world. Most commonly, these heroes are largely part of a team simply known as the Sentinels, their code names and faces as well as known as any celebrity on Earth. Granted, there are many that are dubious of the Sentinels, but by and large they are well accepted and received in times of crisis. This team has five known members with one very recent addition; this team has one mutant (The Regenerator), two aliens from two different planets (Enyo and Mimic), one non-powered gadget-user (The Scarab), and the new member has some skill in the magic arts (Grail), which is seen as an unusual factor in this version of Earth. The Sentinels at this time have only been functioning for a year with their magic user having been added in the past month.
Public knowledge about aliens has been an increasing factor in the past five years, what with some welcoming alien vagrants who have no where else to go or who cannot find their way home with the occasional villainous alien who may have decided to attempt to take over a country or even the world with no success. Mutants of this world are largely created by seeming accidents, but some rumors have perpetuated in stating that their government, particularly the United States, has been doing testing on purpose to see if they can increase the chances of superpowered people for their armed forces. At this time, that only seems to be gossip, despite some various suspicions, but few seem to take to the idea seriously.
Magic, at this time, seems to be largely accepted as a ridiculous concept and highly unlikely to exist. Several people even state that Grail just has superpowers and no magic whatsoever, but contrary to the public opinion, magic very much exists in the world and has for many centuries, albeit often forgotten, overlooked, or hidden away.
Overall, the best explanation one could take away from this is this: costumed people, whether by alien heritage, magic, genetic mutation, or clever devices and intellect, do exist in variation forms. Some wish to do good, others wish to use their skills selfishly, or others want to be left alone.
History:
A little over 21 years ago, a heavily pregnant woman named Florica was traveling in a remote region of Spain. Soon, she was to give birth, and she had known this, intended to live somewhere distant and peaceful to raise her twins who have yet to be born.
In the woods, she had to stop to rest many times, finding herself often weak and sick. Eventually, before her, a humanoid form with a golden glow appeared before her, seeming to have impressive wide wings made of metal. This being informed her that her children would not make it to her destination, that if she were to give birth they would not survive -- but he could save her daughter. The abrupt news was a lot for a sickly, pregnant mother to take in. She had many questions; who was this being? What interest did it have in her children? The being advised that she only had a short time to decide. "I am Razhail. Though, isn't it best to just accept benevolence as it has come to you, sweet Florica? I would see that your daughter would make it to the light of the next day," the golden being said to her, its voice soothing and calm.
Reluctantly, she agreed, although finding the decision difficult. What else could she do on her own? The being braced a palm to her belly, warmth embracing her. The illness that swept her so consistently on her journey began to fade, and she felt relieved. She thanked the being.
"No. My gratitude is to you. You have done the right thing," the golden being assured. "She will live. I grieve for your son, and I can do nothing for him, but at least one may live."
He soon departed, leaving Florica bewildered but promised that at least one child will live. Still, she found herself quickly saddened and grieving at the concept that she would lose the other. Though Florica left to continue her journey, it was only a few hours in before she was stopped abruptly by a hulking woman, a giant with horns adorned her head and spikes lining her brow and elbows. Heat radiated off of her, and a pair of yellow eyes peering down as she clutched a book with a strange symbol under one arm. The giant immediately called the woman naive, warning she may have doomed all to her choice. "There is time, however. Time for us, and your other child," she said.
The woman stated her name was Ifra, a self-proclaimed servant of King Nacht, and that she was present to give her a contract, if she chose to accept it. It would promise that her son would live, but at the price of Florica's own life. While Florica was granted time to review the contract, she knew how precious little time she had. The contract itself was fairly detailed even if it left her with many questions; it explained that King Nacht's magical blood used as ink in the contract would be used to keep her child alive if she signed, as well as using her life force with her blood as ink. Although there was a brief summary of who King Nacht was, it was not a name known to her and it left her uncertain. Still, she asked if she signed it if she would live long enough to see both her children.
Ifra answered grimly that she would, but barely.
With her blood, Florica signed the contract, promising life to her son. Ifra was gruff but assisted Florica in reaching the town in the dead of night, helping her to a room for the following 24 hours. As both promises kept, Florica gave birth to two children: the daughter whom she named Cecelia with beautiful blue eyes and the slightest hint of blonde hair, and the son named Damon who sported oddly colored skin, two nubs on his brow, and bright red eyes, who proceeded to wail in an ungodly tone but was quickly soothed by his mother's voice and affection.
Ifra assured that she had every intention of watching over both of her children. Florica spent the remaining hours of her life watching her newly born children in fascination and wonder before she passed on. What she could not know are two factors in this story: (1) Razhail was a being known as the valka, angelic in presence with proficiency in light magic, though his exact motives a mystery and (2) King Nacht was a dragon lord whose true form was resting, but again the rest remains a mystery.
For the next ten years, Ifra spent her days acting as a guardian to both children, traveling across Europe and hardly staying in one location for long. Although she had little patience in raising either, she did at times act more tender toward Damon than Cecelia, often allowing him more leniency with his softness and emotions than his sister. With no skill with Cecelia's brand of light magic, Ifra could only offer ways of fighting physically and protecting oneself. Cecelia did find a certain niche with these teachings, Damon found that he had little grace with it. Neither were given many details about their mother, simply being told that she died so both could live, and their heritage kept quiet otherwise. They spent little time in any cities or towns, Ifra informing them sternly that no human could accept them. Unfortunately, Damon often found that to be a cruel truth on the occasions he did attempt human interaction; after all, he'd grown horns and a pair of wings to match his strange, almost demonic appearance, which was a stark contrast to Cecelia who appeared to be a normal blonde-haired, blue-eyed girl. Humans would find him something to be afraid of, whereas Cecelia would be welcomed easily.
Not long after their respective tenth birthdays, there was an alien attack during their travels, the first signs of potential invaders to Earth and the first real public display of aliens. Ifra dedicated this moment in protecting the two children, shoving the book she'd kept with her all this time into Damon's arms before telling them to flee and hide, and to do everything they could to protect each other if they do not see her again. Although Damon was reluctant to leave their only known caretaker, Cecelia took him by the hand and they both fled, surviving the alien attack. They had not seen any sign of Ifra since.
Eventually, the twins found their way to the United States. From Damon's point of view, Cecelia remained a kind, protective sister, determined to make sure that they would both survive. Although at times she would seem to whisper or laugh to herself, Damon took this into account that it was just her imaginary friend she'd kept all this time for comfort, Razhail. For him, he found comfort in the book he held in his arms that once belonged to Ifra; the symbols inside were strange and foreign -- not that he could read, anyway, as he was illiterate.
There came a day on their thirteenth birthday that Damon woke up, finding himself alone. He was certain that Cecelia would come back to him.
When the days rolled by and he was still alone, Damon discovered quickly that this would not be the case, and found he had to defend himself. Although he knew that people would not look to him kindly for his appearances, he had found protection and comfort in either Ifra or Cecelia up until this time, and found himself alone.
As Damon continued to grow up, the book he kept began to imbue him with knowledge if he touched a page. They were spells. With practice, he found that he could cast magic, although all of them were dark magic in nature. Still, with this, he could protect himself, and perhaps others if he truly needed to.
Not long after Damon's fourteenth birthday, he ran into his sister at last. She seemed more radiant, and behind her were a pair of floating metallic wings, which was a little different but who was he to call anything strange? He approached her after she finished intervening on a street mugging. Rather than greeting him warmly, Cecelia was oddly cold, turning away from him, telling him to leave. He didn't understand; why was she behaving this way?
Cecelia told him sternly that she was better off without him, and to not follow him. Dismayed but respectful of her wishes, Damon left her, finding himself truly alone once more.
The years rolled by, and Damon managed to get by on beating criminals and taking their money or belongings in order to live, pawning the items he'd find or keeping valuables. After all, they were the bad guys; what would it matter? However, he grew tired of having no real permanent home, wanting nothing more than a place to call his own. Off and on during this time, he bumped into Cecelia on occasion, but her attitude toward him was colder and colder, leaving him empty. Eventually, Damon found semi-permanance in a city named Pentawater on the East Coast close to New England. The city was big enough to hide in and enough criminals on the rise that he could make a meager living off of. After a few weeks, he ran into a strange, masked young woman who was known to certain locals as the Cadejo, a determined vigilante with a no-nonsense attitude.
After a few more instances of running into the Cadejo, she eventually made him an offer: join her, stay in her hideout, pay rent, and occasionally help her with investigations if she so asked for it. Although her cold demeanor was not desirable, Damon did appreciate her not giving him difficulty for his appearance and opted to join her, and eventually discovered her identity as Monica Cruz. They gradually began to have more roommates, including the speedster Alison Jones, the cynical Petunia "Pete" Binks who had the unfortunate superpower of decaying things she touched, and the stressed out college student with developed powers through an accident named Vinnie Benanti. During his time assisting Monica in her heroics, he has been given the code name Grim.
A month rolled by while all of them lived together in a strange situation, mostly because all of them needed a place to stay and Monica offered such meager rent in return while insisting upon their help. Eventually, around this time, the addition of Grail -- or as Damon knows her, Cecelia -- to the Sentinels became famous. Although Damon recognized his sister, he refused to express his knowledge about her. Instead, he focused on what Monica was looking for, if only because it allowed him a place to stay and no longer a place where he's alone, at least.
Personality:
By all appearances, Damon seems like someone who might be a bit too in love with Hot Topic, what with the horns, black nails, and so on. Fortunately, this is only by appearances; Damon may not have typical human features, but at heart he is something of a marshmallow. Whatever physical presence might suggest, Damon is someone who is more concerned about how to not put his foot in his mouth in a social situation as opposed to coming off as a Cool Dude. Suffice it to say, if someone spends at least 10 minutes with him, they'll find out very quickly that he's incredibly socially awkward and often too shy to be too engaged in a conversation.
That also does mean that Damon is a pushover. Once he's asserted that someone doesn't mean him any harm, they can easily bully him into doing what they want in most cases. This boils down to the fact that Damon has difficulty finding self-worth within himself, lacking confidence in most things. He's a young man of unusual appearances and abilities who has no true idea on what he's even supposed to be, and has encountered usually people being afraid of him based on his appearance. He has no love for the fact that he is able to cast dark magic, and often finds himself reluctant to learn further. Deep in his heart, Damon would rather be a normal human man than whatever it is that he was born to be. To have people that choose to be around him, he is either suspicious of them desiring to use him or that he will one day lose them -- but he doesn't have the strength within to truly confront these thoughts and feelings. Basically, while Damon can definitely be bullied to do certain things, he also does have a difficult time actually trusting a person.
Having rarely spent much time around many people socially outside of his caretaker and sister, Damon has a difficult time integrating himself into conversations and activities with others. He isn't sure how to become involved, and tends to find that either he'll blurt something out that might not quite fit into the tone of the situation or even be a full thought. So, often, he tends to remain silent and observe when it comes to people. He does want to be more involved with other people, but he's very soft-spoken and just hasn't found his footing yet when it comes to social situations and is just clumsy about it at this point in time.
With all of this in mind, Damon is someone who is at least attempting to do the right thing. He hasn't had a lot of guidance in terms of right and wrong, and at this time has discerned that stealing from other people is wrong, stopping a thief is right, etc. However, he is also concerned with survival, which means he will stop a thief, but then he will take that thief's belongings as they no longer deserve those items and Damon needs them more to survive off of. It's a bit of a mixed up morality system, but it makes sense to Damon who feels he hasn't been given any other choice about it. If he's in a situation where he doesn't actually have to worry about survival, he may still opt to make the decision that a thief/criminal does not deserve their personal effects since it's a decision he's used to making.
In a lot of ways, Damon may also approach things with child-like wonder. He hasn't had a lot of downtime in his life, which also means having the actual ability and time to interact with his surroundings playfully is a new and fantastic thing. If he sees freshly fallen snow and there's no immediate crisis or anyone around to notice him? Oh, you better believe he's going to play in the snow. There are pillows and blankets around and no one nearby to notice? A fort is definitely being made. On his own without any eyes, Damon will definitely goof off when he can and find his own entertainment, but with anyone else around will certainly feel self-conscious about it.
Finally, Damon is someone who does desire real companionship. He's lived his life in strange affairs, having never really had a stable home to truly stay in or companions that remain with him. While he doubts he'll ever really have anything like that, he does want it more than anything else. Essentially, this is a young man who's been denied stability in many ways, and would love nothing more than to have it -- to not worry about being alone, whether he'll have somewhere to live tomorrow, and have a way to make sure he'll have something to eat reliably.
Canon Abilities/Skills:
Flight - Due to the wings on Damon's back. Fairly self-explanatory.
Flame breath - The flames appear black with a few green highlights, and are magical in nature. It can still act as a normal flame to set something on fire, but if used on a person its affects seem to be both flame and acidic in nature.
Claws - Damon has black claws that can extend. They cause a mild infection if someone is scratched, but it's easily rectified with proper home medical care.
Durability and Strength - Damon's skin is tougher than most, so hurting him is going to take a bit of effort. That's not to say that he's invulnerable, just that he can take some punches and won't be getting any paper cuts anytime soon. A bullet from a handgun is more likely to get caught in his skin than completely pierce him, for example, but it will still make him bleed and hurt him. He's strong enough to lift up one end of a car without straining too much, but cannot the vehicle outright over his head, so suffice it to say he's not going to win any arm wrestling matches with Superman anytime soon.
Spellcasting - This is truly where Damon shines. He can learn and practice spellcasting, and seems proficient primarily in dark magic. Theoretically, he can cast light magic, but its effects would be incredibly weak from him or darkened in some way. At this time, he's really only learned magic by absorbing some knowledge from his spellbook. Spells revealed later would be approached to the mods with permission and would not happen suddenly without prior mod approval, and spells cannot be read canonically by any person at this time. The spells he knows at this time are:
- Healing: If someone is suffering from a bloodied wound, he can help regenerate them, would it will cause them incredible pain in return. At this time, he cannot do anything that would mean reattaching limbs, replacing missing parts, or healing a sickness.
- Dark Shudder: A ball of shadow magic is thrown by Damon. Upon impact to a person, it causes damage, as well as the uncomfortable notion that something is not quite right and may cause the person to feel unnaturally afraid.
- Shadow Grasp: Damon reaches for someone's shadow, grabbing them and keeping them from moving. He can also use this spell to pick up objects if they do, in fact, have a shadow.
- Nightmare: Damon causes someone to sleep for an undetermined amount of time, ranging from a few minutes to a full 24 hours. When that person is asleep, they will suffer distressing nightmares of their worst fears. The amount of time the person sleeps can either be determined by RNG or at the player's discretion.
Animal Handling - Damon absolutely loves animals of all kinds, and they instinctively tend to find him a little less threatening than other creatures. This doesn't mean that, say, a temperamental boar is suddenly going to be calm around him but a frightened dog might find Damon at least a little welcoming.
ON STATION 72
Symbiote Specialization: RHO
Symbiote Ability: PAIN INDUCEMENT
STAGE ONE
(+) At first, this will manifest itself in annoying, nagging aches. Maybe a headache, or giving someone an unfortunate cramp.
(-) Damon will feel dizzy and and faint for an hour after use.
STAGE TWO
(+) Something more along the lines of a severe charley horse, a migraine, pain enough to make someone feel nauseated. Enough that it definitely cannot be ignored easily.
(-) Damon will consequently lose control of his flame breath, magical fire constantly spilling out of his mouth if he opens it for any reason for the next few hours. Better swallow down that fire! He will also feel dizzy and faint during this time.
STAGE THREE
(+) At this stage, Damon can induce enough pain to cause someone to feel like their nerves are on fire. It would be enough to cause any average person scream from the severity. It is not enough to kill, but it is enough to hurt.
(-) On top of losing control of his flame breath as well as feeling dizzy and faint, Damon will proceed to hallucinate for the next several hours. Hallucinations can range from the walls feeling like they're coming in too close, to being convinced that something is crawling under his skin, or some other unfortunate vision.
Inventory:
- Spellbook.
- Super glue.
